A Gorgeous Renovated Kitchen and Entryway for this Ottawa Mid-Century Home.

How it all began…

This project began with the goal of updating the kitchen and entryway of this gorgeous mid-century modern Ottawa home. We wanted to give the space a refresh that made it more suitable to the architecture and flow of the house.

Dream clients and a dream project

Working with this client was a dream for Jen Robinson Design. From the beginning, we were on the same page in terms of design, details, and how we wanted the finished space to look and feel. Increasing kitchen storage, as well as incorporating additional seating and eating areas were the functional goals of this project. We were able to work within the client’s budget and ensure the space worked for the entire family, which included two adults, one child and two dogs.

The kitchen design and renovation

The kitchen area of this home presented a few limitations when it came to the design. We were required to design within the original footprint and work around the existing wood beams and central fireplace unit. The space offers ample natural light, which we improved in the kitchen space by opening up the sink to the dining area beyond as well as through the use of simple white custom cabinetry. We flipped the location of the sink and stove and chose a large, deep under-mount sink and a beautiful quartz countertop. The addition of brushed gold accents was repeated throughout the space with the cabinetry handles and decor elements. The location of the fridge was also changed to accommodate a beautiful brand-new stainless steel unit with large double doors. We added a vibrant backsplash for a pop of colour and visual interest to this otherwise neutral space. Finally, we opted to paint the ceiling beams a stunning matte black, which added contrast to the very tall, natural wood ceilings.

It’s all in the details

Other design details that were included in this fantastic kitchen update were the addition of a custom tall pantry cabinet and the incorporation of the microwave directly into the cabinetry. We also updated the lighting along the beams with sleek track lighting as well as under cabinet lighting directly over the sink to increase the brightness and usability of the space. Additional seating on the other side of the open wall was another design element that improved the functionality of the kitchen. New off-white tile flooring was installed to highlight the contrast between the white cabinetry, natural wood elements, and matte black accents.

The big reveal

Thanks to our amazing team and wonderful clients, we overcame a handful of challenges along the way, keeping the project on track from beginning to end. We were able to meet all of our client’s goals and expectations while also adhering to the projected budget and timeline. Overall, the clients were thrilled with their new space, and we were so excited to show them the finished product.
